I was thinking this morning that my love of 'Nutcrackers' may be a little known fact. I'm not quite sure why I love them so, but I have since I was a child. Although I never had my very own until I was a young adult, married with children and putting up my own Christmas decorations.
Every year since, I have tried to add only one to my collection no matter how big or small. Did you know that nutcrackers have been allegedly around since the 15th century and originated in Germany and that 'Steinbach's' are one of the most sought after?

William Shakespeare
While I don't have any 'themed' nutcrackers such as these made by Steinbach... (Wowza $) I love all my little traditional nutcrackers just the same... although I like all of these very much too, esp. the Wizard. I wonder if I would ever incorporate him into my collection, I tend to be a purest in certain things Christmas. Did you know there is a 'Nutcracker Museum' in Washington? And the 'Nutcracker Lady' curator of the museum opened Conan Obrien's first show on TBS?

The Wizard of Oz
It has occurred to me to try making one in years past...but this year I may actually give one a try with AH's help... It also may be a little known fact that AH has 'mad' carpentry skills. And ironically enough "so" patient with the details and 'patient' is never a word that I would use to describe him...but the quality of his work is amazing. Now that I'm saying this, it makes me wonder if that's why he likes making gingerbread houses so much??

36" Nutcracker
The 36" nutcracker above is almost exactly like last years addition to my collection, the only difference is in the hat...mine as a black fake fur hat with a emerald and feather affixed to the front. I was so excited the day I brought him home. I got him for a steal, already on sale plus a store coupon made him almost free...I would have never paid full price for him no matter how much I loved him and I do love him! He is the biggest nutcracker I have...the rest are all sorts of shapes and sizes. AH has gradually over the last couple of days been sorting Christmas boxes for me so we can figure out what exactly will fit in our wee little cottage. He had set last years nutcracker beside the kitchen hutch and as I was looking at him last night I asked AH how easy he thought it would be for us to try making one, for which he replied happily but cautiously, 'easy'. He then reminded me how close to Christmas we are and gave me a small but caring lecture about my tendency to take on 'too' much and the consequences for me which usually = me being in bed for at least a day and depending sometimes longer. Appreciating the thought I assured him I wouldn't be a crazy lady and push it, I said this could be this years addition and if it's not finished by Christmas it would be ok... so to be cont... Hopefully I will have pics to post of the process.
Until then... I hope your having a blessed day.
